In the newspaper of the Italian bishops, Pope Francis addressed criticism over his ecumenical efforts. They are so far reaching as for the Pope to apologise to the Waldenses church leaders, the early christian church in the wilderness that was driven to extinction and the number of deaths at the hand of the church is incalculable, that’s the history of the church’s work.

The Pope once again stated as did his predecessor, ‘Proselytism among Christians, therefore, in itself, is a grave sin.’The very reason why the persecution and crimes against humanity in the name of Christ began was the Waldenses proselytising. persecution-of-waldenses-granger

A journalist then asked, “Why?” “Because it contradicts the very dynamic of how to become and to remain Christian,” he said. “The Church is not a soccer team that goes around seeking fans.”

No its not a soccer team but it is about following the teachings of Jesus otherwise the whole Christian thing has lost its power and meaning. Of course Jesus did not say not to Proselytise, this is not the words of Jesus. When the people were in great darkness He gave them light and what He passed on to His disciples was dispersed to the world for all have the same opportunities and privileges to be sons and daughters of God.

Matthew 28:18 And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth.
28:19 Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:
28:20 Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, [even] unto the end of the world. Amen.

And the Pope has called the faithful not to be driven by end-times curiosities or apocalyptic preachers, urging them to focus on what is truly important: “The Lord and our neighbor.” The apostle Paul says

2 Timothy 3:16 All scripture [is] given by inspiration of God, and [is] profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:
3:17 That the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works.   A balanced person should have faith and love and know where they are in the stream of time and prophetic utterance has been given for this purpose. And the warning is given in

1 Timothy  4:16 Take heed unto thyself, and unto the doctrine; continue in them: for in doing this thou shalt both save thyself, and them that hear thee.

Francis even goes on to say ‘Martin Luther, a key figure in the Protestant Reformation, realized this: “the refusal of an image of the Church as an organization that can go ahead ignoring the grace of the Lord, or considering it as a possession to be taken for granted, guaranteed a priori.”‘

To what laws and teaching are the Papacy dedicated, just read the 10 commandments to start with. Then what Luther said may have substance. When the Papal bull was set against Luther he said. It is Christ himself who is condemned therein.” “I glory in the prospect of suffering for the best of causes. Already I feel greater liberty; for I know now that the pope is antichrist, and that his throne is that of Satan himself.”  {GC88 141.2}

The spirit of ecumenism is important for its influence to gain the Protestant world particularly the most powerful nation on earth the USA. The catholic church is tolerant where she is helpless or in the ascendancy. Says Bishop O’Connor: ‘Religious liberty is merely endured until the opposite can be carried into effect without peril to the Catholic world.’. . . The archbishop of St. Louis once said: ‘Heresy and unbelief are crimes; and in Christian countries, as in Italy and Spain, for instance, where all the people are Catholics, and where the Catholic religion is an essential part of the law of the land, they are punished as other crimes.’. . .  {GC 565.1}
