Venice
The first question that came to me when I saw Venice was how did such a beautiful and unique place like this arise on the water and why are there no other places like this built on the sea? The answer was the difficult circumstances the Northerners of Italy faced and needed to seek refuge.
This city is built on a swamp, on mud, a desolate area at first. To build on the mud millions of timber poles were driven into the ground to strike firmer base from which a platform was built with timber cross beams and then with marble on the top. You also have to consider that there was none of this timber or building material on the lagoon.

One of the first places we see on land is St Marks square and there the church built has a relic of the body of St Mark stolen from Alexandria Egypt- naturally called St Marks Basilica. Under St Marks the foundation is driven down more than 15 feet into the ground- we are talking about the large area of the square on dry land after you step off the Ferry. Hard to image a swamp area being transformed into such a splendid area. Some buildings needed more than a million timber poles beneath them.
The last picture is not my own but it is to show you Redentore Church which was built in thanksgiving for deliverance from a major outbreak of the plague between 1575 and 1576, in which some 46,000 people (25–30% of the population) died. A boat bridge is built every year for a festive celebration- beautiful and popular of course and we also see how the papacy uses festivals to attract people to itself.

A bridge of barges is built connecting Giudecca to the rest of Venice. Sunday is devoted to religious celebrations”
