I wanted to see the Lateran square for its historical significance and the church of St John in Lateran which lies on the Cecilian hill one of the seven hills of Rome. Visiting this church turned out to be a nice surprise for me as the treasury was outstanding. Also the Pope’s throne perhaps less elaborate than might be expected but I wasn’t expected to see a throne there to begin with. You can see the wall which defines Italy from the Vatican which occurred with Mussolini signing back to the Pope territory including St Peter’s and St John’s even though they are ‘outside the wall.’

Across is the road is Scala Sancta. As written here in Latin she claims to be the Mother of all churches.

The impressive figures that line the Basilica resemble that of St Peter’s as does the front facade. 

If only they were delivering the words on Christ in the simple language of the people.

These memorial to themselves but shall it last as a memorial into eternity?
